THE MONSTRUMOLOGIST by RICK YANCEY

“He knew the truth. Yes, my dear child, he would undoubtedly tell a terrified toddler tremulously seeking succor, monsters are real. I happen to have one hanging in my basement.

I was pleasantly surprised at how dark this story actually is, considering it's technically actually young adult fiction...

Great world building, mostly great characters, interesting monster choice for this first book. And one of the better prologue/epilogue wraparounds I've read in quite some time.

The only real issue I had with the book is with the protagonist Will Henry. The guy lacks any real agency, but I'm hoping for an evolution of character as the series continues.

I'm certainly interested to see where the continuing story goes.
